The guys have 3 consecutive centuries (100 mile ride) as they travel along the Erie Canal.
Today we crossed the border and rode from Niagara Falls, Ontario to Fairport NY. Approx 75 miles of the 103 miles were along the Erie Canal.
It was a very nice ride along the canal, but something extraordinary happened along the way.
We had stopped for lunch in the town of Holley NY, at Sam’s Diner.
While we were seated in our booth, a fellow who had just entered came over and said we had left our bike lights on. We thanked him for letting us know and told him we usually leave them on, and that they don’t consume too much energy.
About 10 minutes later, another patron came in, and she walked over to us and told us the same thing - about the lights being on.
We have traveled approx 3000 miles, and we always leave the lights flashing while we dine, and no one has ever said anything, and here we were in Holley, and 2 people felt that we should be aware of our lights being left on.
After we finished our lunch, we asked Kim, who had been serving us, for the check, she said there’s no check, the people who were seated in the booth behind us, and who had already left, had paid for our lunch.
We were stunned, we had not had any interaction with the couple, except Pat had nodded a hello to them as he returned from the WC. I hadn’t even seen them because they were seated behind me. We asked Kim for some information about them, she said she doesn’t really know them, and they come in only occasionally. And she added that people in this town have done that from time to time as a goodwill gesture towards strangers from out of this small town - and it was obvious we were not from this town.
And lastly, Pat and I were taking a selfie of us outside, in front of the diner, when Kim came out and asked if we would like her to take a pic of us.
I said actually we would like her to be in the pic with us.
Here’s a pic of us with Kim in front of the Diner. As it turns out, Kim is actually the manager.
We first connected with the Canal at Lockport.
Met Linda's friend, Barbara, in Pittsford for lunch. She showed us a deserted portion of the Canal.
We are staying in Fairport, NY in one of the creepiest places. Every corner is stuffed with knickknacks and the place smells musty. It gives me the heeby jeebies.
I think this is supposed to be the breakfast room |
